Do Jardim Gulbenkian a Monsanto (bycicle tour)
with Landscaper Mariana Machado

The landscape’s plants and their habitats
( Phytogeographical Bicycle Tour)
We will traverse famed landscaper Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles’ “Green Corridor”, which connects the Calouste Gulbenkian foundation with the Monsanto forest, and learn to understand to what extent the Gulbenkian garden replicates Portugal’s scenery.
What is Lisbon’s ecological structure and what is its significance? What measure of influence does the climate, the soil, the geology, the presence of water and the exposure to the sun have on determining the vegetation of a given place?
There are certain plants whose existence precisely indicates which especies are likely to spontaneously grow at a given site without human intervention - these plants are called bioindicators. During this tour we will learn how to identify some of these and other plants and get to know the dynamics of a natural landscape.

Nota: The visitors are kindly requested to bring their own bicycle, some water and a snack for lunch.

Meeting point: Gulbenkian Garden - the foundation’s head office

The “Alfacinhas”  and their Marian Worship
– From Graça to Campo Santana

with Landscaper Eduardo Costa Pinto
Lisbon, land of farmers (“alfacinhas - little lettuces”), where the Marian cult’s persistence up at the Nossa Senhora do Monte viewpoint appears as a reminiscence of some long-forgotten time. A journey through time back to the neolithic period and the migrations of the groups of farmers coming from the mediterranean basin that formed modern Europe’s chromosomic landscape, especially south of the alpine lands.
A story that talks about women and their worship, about feminine deities and fertility symbols, used as a means to positively celebrate the farmhouse’s productivity. Myth or fact, may these stories nourish the narrative and changing ethics of the farmer’s landscapes and may they thus construct new patterns of how to change the Earth, or the horticultural order characterised by the human effort.1

Horticulture in Telheiras
with Graça Ribeir
In 2007 Lisbon’s municipal chamber, the CML, started developing strategies for urban agriculture, and since 2011 has been creating various horticultural parks - gardens or urban parks that had their own qualities enhanced by the addition of limited areas dedicated to agricultural practices.
These spaces and activities permit the evolution of a collective environmental consciousness by virtue of encouraging teaching and applying good agricultural practices. The interchange, help and sharing that takes place during the cultivation of these vegetable gardens reinforce social relations within the neighbourhood and among the users.
During this visit we will have the opportunity to get to know the horticultural park of Telheiras with the support of Graça Ribeiro, who will present the park’s different plots and their relation to the city and the overall project of the horticultural parks.

Gulbenkian Garden
with Prof. Dr. Aurora Carapinha
Constructed in the 1960s following a project by the landscapers António Viana Barreto and Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles, the Gulbenkian Foundation’s garden is one of the few in Portugal that mirrors quite clearly the principles of modern garden design, and yet this way of designing and imagining the landscape and the garden has its roots in a larger discussion that deals with the idea of nature within Portuguese culture.
Once again we have the honour of the landscaper Aurora Carapinha’s presence, who will reveal to us why this garden “constitutes an oeuvre of exceptional dimension, program and technical competence, of special significance for national and international architecture” and was - along with the main building, to which it is intrinsically tied - elevated to the status of National Monument (Council of Portuguese Ministers, 2011).

Sábios da Terra
Sábios da Terra
David Segarra,
Espanha, 2018 (12’)

In a confused world we discover the last wise men and women where we would least imagine them: among the old peasants of southern Europe. Sages of the land recover the stories and experiences of rural men and women. Through them we discover a cultural, human and geographical world forgotten by modern society - stories that guard a universal message about human experience.

Feature Film

Floresta Eterna

Evgenia Emets,
Portugal, 2018 (41’)

This film, shot in Gois, Lousã and Arganil - centres on the issue of deforestation in Portugal as well as human relationship with the forest. The film includes 12 interviews with Portuguese and international citizens living off the land in their area, some of whom have been affected by recent fires in Gois. The film is also part of a larger project, which took place in Gois in May and June of 2018, with an exhibition of visual works and a sensory experience in one of the unburnt local forests which I managed to find.
